WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET A TRAFFIC TICKET :

This advice was sent by a retired State Farm agent! This system has been tried and it works in every state.

If you get a speeding ticket or went through a red light, or whatever the case may be, you're going to get points on your license and a surcharge on your auto insurance. This is a method to insure that you DO NOT get the points.

When you get your fine,
send in a check to pay for it.. If the fine is $79.00 make the check out for $82.00, some small amount over the fine.

The system will then have to
send you back a check for the difference.
However, here is the trick:
DO NOT CASH THE REFUND CHECK! Throw it away! THAT'S RIGHT...THROW IT AWAY...

Points are not assessed to your license until all Financial Transactions are complete.
If you do not cash the check, then the transactions are NOT complete. The system has received its money and is satisfied and will no longer bother you.

This information comes from an unmentionable computer company that sets up the standard databases used by every state.

Now I don't know if this works or not - but I will definitely keep it in the back of my mind just in case I ever do get a ticket. With the price of insurance .... anything that could possibly help is a blessing.

OK I'm crying UNCLE!

Some how we have really enraged the snow Gods or whatever they are cause once again they have dumped on us. This is looking out my front door this morning.
And this is the snow in the protected area of my driveway this morning, AFTER it was plowed out yesterday late afternoon. We ran the snow blower over the areas that the plow can't get to well, because of its closeness to the house and deck, and this was what was left after hubby's first pass. That's over 13" of the white stuff that fell overnight.

I am hoping that it is finally finished - but I'm NOT holding my breath. Right after we finished and came inside to warm up - the sun came out really nicely. That lasted about 5 minutes because then the snow started again WHILE the sun was shining.

They say this is the worst winter, snow wise, that we have had in at least 10 years. I believe that. I really can't remember the last time we got back to back storms, dropping at least 13 inches nor when we have gotten a minimum of 2 good snow storms each month starting in EARLY December.

I am definitely finished ....... UNCLE already!

Life's Little Lessons

Week 7 in our Journey through "Life's Little Instruction Book"

30) Never buy a house without a fireplace
I LOVE a fireplace - so I totally agree with this.

31) Buy whatever kids are selling on card tables in their front yard
Remember when you were a kids? Didn't you sell lemonade or something ??

32) Once in your life, own a convertible
I loved driving the convertible on our trip in California. I think it is a must have if you live in a warm climate!

33) Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated.
This is a no brainer.

Choices

At a fund-raising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, could not learn things as other children do. He could not understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Or do they "forget" and bypass him?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

We all have choices in this world, to make things just a little better. Select your choices wisely as you never know just how much your choice will effect others.

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them .

May your day, be a Shay Day.

Red Friday

If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below to see how it went for one man...

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together...

After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

No, he responded.

Heading out I asked?

No. I'm escorting a soldier home.

Going to pick him up?

No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his family.

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.

I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you, Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.

Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."

Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.

So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.

Red Fridays.

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday ... and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women a far, will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, & TV let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

Maybe because my daughter is dating a Marine, or maybe its because this war has been going on for so long, or maybe its a combination of the two, but I WILL be finding something red to wear EVERY Friday until all of our men and women are home where they belong and out of harms way each and every day. Won't you join me?

Identify what you want to do.

Identify what you want to accomplish within your life, whether it be with your career, your health, your strengths, your weight, whatever it is.

Set goals to plan for success.
And then go and DO IT!

You are the master of your destiny - don't sit around and wait for someone else to do it for you. You could be waiting a very long time - do it yourself and you will be so much more successful and proud of yourself.

Life's Little Lessons

Week 6 in our Journey through "Life's Little Instruction Book"

25) Ask for a raise when you feel you've earned it.
You are your best advocate. Work hard, work smart, be the best you can be.

26) If in a fight, hit first and hit hard
I'd rather not be in a fight - but don't want to be a whimp either.

27) Return all things that you borrow.
Don't make people come looking for something of theirs. Make them want to loan things to you because they know it will be returned - promptly.

28) Teach some kind of class
You are a wealth of knowledge - find something that you are good at and share the knowledge.

29) Be a student in some kind of class
You are never too old to learn - find something that you always wanted to learn about and DO IT!

New Day

Well its a new day here in snowville. Now we didn't get as much (in total) as oh say Washington DC but we sure did get alot! So much so that the snow plow that came to plow us out ........ got stuck!!!!

Thankfully it was relatively easy to dig him out - so it was a quick fix and he was able to dig out enough of our cracked stone driveway to allow us to move around ie get out of the garage and out into the rest of the snowy world.

Those pictures were taken last night - and today is a new day, but I haven't uploaded any of the new pictures I took early this morning. But I will - fear not - since it didn't get any better with the dawn of the new day ----- pretty to see, not so pretty to have to dig out.

Life's Little Lessons

Week 5 in our Journey Through "Life's Little Instruction Book"

20) Be forgiving of yourself and others.
You are human, you WILL make mistakes. Others are human too.
Forgive but remember your mistakes so that you can not make them again.
We are not the final judge - let God be the judge

21) Learn three clean jokes
If I look in my joke file - most have some "connotations" that you might not want to tell your mom or your kids or your boss. You really need to have a few "safe" jokes.

22) Wear polished shoes.
And NO it doesn't mean Patent Leather!

23) Floss your teeth
Don't you just hate when you get a poppy seed stuck ??

24) Drink Champagne for no reason at all.
For the same reason you use the silver - what are you waiting for?

What was your Favorite Super Bowl Commercial?

I want to congratulate the New Orleans Saints, the 2010 Super Bowl Champs, on a great win. I have to say, for me, it was one of the better games.

But the commercials?? I have to say I was extremely unimpressed. In fact I was rather disappointed.

I thought the best commercial was by Doritos. I should have said the 2 best commercials - because I'm torn between two.

The first one was the Doritos commercial with the dog and the no bark collar. It just gave me this sweet feeling that "revenge can be so sweet", as I was laughing at the guy rolling around on the ground.

The second one was also the Doritos commercial with the little kid and mom's date. I absolutely loved when he smacked the date and said "First, Keep your hands off my momma. Second, Keep your hands off my Doritos".

Other than that - I thought they were either boring, stupid or unmemorable (if that's even a word) or is it unremarkable? Whichever, I was totally unimpressed.

How about you?

So are you ready for ..........

Some FOOTBALL!

Are you ready for Super Bowl? Are you doing anything special or just sitting at home watching the game? We're just staying home - which is a good thing since Bill work up feeling "under the weather". I think he has a bit of the flu (ugh) but hopefully he can get rid of it quickly. Having a sick male at home is NEVER a good thing.

Are you in any of the numerous Football Pools? I'm in one in my office (2 boxes for me) and Bill is in one in his office (only 1 box for him).

Jenn just left to go to a Super Bowl party with some kids from school.

Do you have anything special planned snack wise? Or are you going to be really really good and just watch?

Let Me Call You Sweetheart ....

What a great idea - lets talk about Valentine's Day.
Do you do anything special for Valentine's Day? Do you have any plans? Is this your first Valentine's Day together or are you an "old timer" like me?

Young love is so special. I get to "live" this specialness again with my daughter and her BF. Now it is a little different for them this year - because he is a Marine, who is stationed right now, in California. His new orders don't come through until late April, so right now they are only about 3,000 miles apart. They talk every day (gotta love computer networks) before he goes to "work" and she goes to bed, and then again when she gets up in the morning for either classes or work and he gets ready to sleep. And lets not forget the ever present phone for text messages, thank God for unlimited text messaging - or I'd be broke.

Seems they have decided that Valentine's Day has to be special with special yet tangible proof of their new love. She has a box of things to send to him already, we went shopping together for things about 18 days ago. She didn't want to send it too soon (so that it taunted him to open the box early) but I think she is also open to picking up more things to put in the box. He had already sent a box for her at the end of January, to be on the safe side. Of course Mom had to confiscate it since he specifically said not to open until Valentine's Day. He put a note on it saying that if she opened it early his heart would explode because it was exposed to the air for too long....can't wait to see what this one means. Now I find out he has more things coming that should be here the Friday before Valentine's Day. Kids .... it's so cute seeing this (I think), ask me again in a few weeks.

But seeing this new found love, I started to think about things you can do to make the day special. Things that don't cost an arm and a leg and are "different" than the day to day. Last year, about a week or so before Valentine's Day, there were blogs all over that were asking for things to do that didn't cost alot of money - since money was tight. Well I don't know about you but I think money is still tight and may be for at least the rest of the year.

More and more people are bringing lunches to work - how about a special "note" tucked into a lunch? Or make a heart shaped cookie, with some special phrase, and tuck that into his (or her) lunch. A heart shaped doily on top (and bottom) of their sandwich, just feels special.

How about a special date night - where one doesn't leave the house?
Make a picnic dinner in the living room.

Have a fireplace? Put your blanket on the floor in front of the fireplace and enjoy dinner there. Just a change of location can make the every day meal feel special and can lead to totally different conversations.

Cut some stars out of aluminum foil and tack them onto the ceiling and walls. After dinner, if not before, turn off the lights and when the fire crackles, and the firelight catches the stars, it will be like they are twinkling just for the two of you. No fireplace ...... CANDLES - again something that is probably out of the ordinary, and everyone should have at least a few candles on hand.

So you see - you don't need to spend alot of money to make the day special, you just have to use your imagination.

Tell me what you think you will do to make this Valentine's Day different? Maybe you can inspire others, as well as yourself, to make this Valentine's Day - THE day to remember. Or maybe you will decide that you had so much fun coming up with a new way to celebrate, you will make this THE way to celebrate EVERY year with your special someone. Think of the great memories you will have.

Now you need to go check out the next blogger with her thoughts on Valentine's Day at www.thefrugalhousewife.com I'm sure she has some wonderful thoughts to keep us going until the actual day!

My wish for you.

"I wish for you ......

Comfort on difficult days
Smiles when sadness intrudes,
Rainbows to follow the clouds,
Laughter to kiss your lips,
Sunsets to warm your heart
Gentle hugs when your spirits sag.
Friendships to brighten your being,
Beauty for your eyes to see,
Confidence for when you are in doubt,
Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.

God bless you.

I asked the Lord to bless you
As I prayed for you today
To guide you and protect you
As you go along your way.

His love is always with you
His promises are true
No matter what the tribulation
You know He will see you through
So when the road you're traveling on
Seems difficult at best,
Give your problems to the Lord
and God will do the rest."

Just in case you haven't heard this today ...... LOVE YOU my Friend!

Have a wonderful day.

Life's Little Lessons

Week 4 of our Journey through Life's Little Instruction Book

16) Be the first to say "hello"
Try it with the next person you pass. It ALWAYS make people smile.

17) Live beneath your means.
Then you will never be afraid that someone will take everything away when you can't make the payments

18) Drive inexpensive cars, but own the best house you can afford
Well I don't drive an inexpensive car - but I definitely agree with the second part - WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD..... then perhaps we wouldn't have been in the mess we got ourselves into with the housing bubble.

19) Buy great books even if you never read them.
Again I'm not sure I totally agree - if you have great books you should read them.
