Hug a teacher

Well school has been in session for at least a few weeks now.
Hopefully everyone has met their children's teachers, at least once.
Have you had back to school night yet?
Do you know what is planned for this school year for your kids?

I saw this one the other day and thought it really needed to be shared.
Maxine does have a way about her.  
Somehow she always seems to "nail it" for us even while we are laughing up a storm.

So if you see a teacher in the next few days ... give him or her a hug.  They are our hope of a better future....or at least a saner one.

Maxine and My New Favorite Winter Sport

I saw this one a few months ago and just knew I had to save it for this day.  I mean they are calling for a Turkey Surprise .... and to say I'm not happy is an understatement!

I don't usually mind the cold ... I mean I'm not a fan of the cold, but it is easier to bundle up and sit by the fire or under a blanket to fight off the Winter Chill.

But when it comes to the White Stuff, yes that is my term for that horrific stuff that falls during the winter months and makes the roads a nightmare, can make travel nearly impossible,

Maxine seems to have the same feelings
 and has come up with a new Winter Sport

I'm thinking its pretty good.

I say this and laughed.
I guess I was really really lucky (or I'm going to get "hit" when I least expect it) but I didn't have any real problems with this.  Or could I really not yet be "old enough" ..........

Now if we said some of the things she says, and lets be truthful we agree with, we would be reemed out left and right.  So Maxine is my hero!

Summer Glow

Oh MAX!

I guess we all have our own definition of "Summer Glow".
Although I do like Maxine's but I also like that nice warm brown golden glow that we can get from the sun (or from the bottle as in spray tan).

How about you? 

Are you a lay in the sun to heck with the consequences type of summer glower?
Are you a "instant" tanner and then a ton of sunscreen?

John Wagner, Hallmark artist since 1970, says Maxine was inspired by his mother, his maiden aunts and his grandmother, the woman who bought him art lessons when 'fill in the pumpkins' was about the extent of his art classes at St. John's Catholic School in Leonia, N.J.

John remembers doodling as a preschooler and says both his grandmother and his mother encouraged his artistic interests. He eventually attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and landed at Hallmark as part of a new artists group. But it was the birth of the humorous Shoebox Greetings (a tiny little division of Hallmark) in 1986 that added a new dimension to John's professional life. The Shoebox way of seeing the world unleashed his talents and he created Maxine.

'Cartoonists are sensitive to the insanities of the world; we just try to humanize them,' John says. 'If Maxine can get a laugh out of someone who feels lonely or someone who is getting older and hates the thought of another birthday, or if she can make someone chuckle about stressful interpersonal relationships, then I'm happy. Putting a smile on someone's face is what it's all about.'

Those smiles have led to Maxine's becoming a bit of a celebrity. She (and John) have been the subject of media stories, including People , USA Today, Good Morning America , The Wall Street Journal, St. Petersburg (FL) Times, and Las Vegas Journal-Review, and they have been included in a major Associated Press story. Collector and trade publications have reported fans nationwide are collecting Maxine items. Letters from consumers and fans to John and Maxine reveal a very personal connection to Maxine.

Many people say they are just like her.

Why the name 'Maxine'? 'People at Shoebox started referring to the character as 'John Wagner's old lady,' and I knew that would get me into trouble with my wife,' John says. The Shoebox team had a contest among themselves to name the character and three of the approximately 30 entries suggested 'Maxine'. John says the name is perfect.

John, who says he's humbled by such acceptance of Maxine, admits he's proud of her.

 Now you know the story of how Maxine came to be.

I really love Maxine, just in case you haven't figure this out already.  She just comes up with some of the best things ........... the stuff we all want to say but because we have to be PC (oh wait I already apologized because I'm not PC) we don't say it.  As you can see - I don't have that problem.  I just let it all go.  It took me many years to be able to do that ..... but now

Oh you are still talking?  Then I think you are thinking ........ VERY GOOD.  Keep it up.  Do NOT let others stifle your creativity or your ability to think for yourself.  It is only when we take responsibility for our actions and our thoughts that we are able to excel both as ourselves and as a nation.  IT IS TIME.
